ELIZABETH WASHBURN

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

I am a representational painter who likes to experiment with contemporary art practices that combine my love of drawing and the formal elements of picture making with subject matter that is personally relevant. Using a variety of materials and mediums, I create visual daydreams that transport myself, and hopefully my viewer, into a relaxed and contemplative state where ambiguity is not only welcomed, but encouraged.

Over the years, I have spent a great deal of time experimenting with art materials such as encaustic wax, paper, stained glass, light, and copper, which has led me to my “Mixed media Lightboxes”. The light boxes are the culmination of the specific visual effects that I am striving to achieve and the memories I am reflecting on. Each artwork is both conceptually driven and well crafted.

BIOGRAPHY

Elizabeth has lived and worked as an artist in San Diego since October 2000. Previously, her professional and educational pursuits led her to living in Cairo, Egypt, New York, and San Francisco, although she was raised in the Midwest.

She is represented by Ronis Fine Art of San Diego where she creates commissioned artwork for commercial and private clients, and exhibits her work regionally. Primarily, she is a narrative painter whose work reflects her personal history, as well as relating the stories of the exceptional people she meets while traveling and teaching in underserved communities.

In addition to teaching art for over 10 years, Elizabeth also founded an expressive arts program called Combat Arts San Diego (www.combatartssd.org) where she provides art classes, cultural tours, public art opportunities, and art exhibitions for combat veterans returning home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

She holds a Master of Fine Arts from Laguna College of Art and Design in Laguna Beach, CA and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA.
